Functional Nutrition

Many of us move through our days without fully realizing how what we eat influences our energy, mood, digestion, and overall wellbeing. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed by conflicting nutrition advice, trending diets, and “superfood” hype. The truth is that there is no single way of eating that works for everyone. Your nutritional needs are shaped by your biology, your lived experiences, your health history, and the unique demands on your body.

Functional Nutrition begins with the understanding that nutrients drive every biological process—healing, repair, immune function, metabolism, and more. But it goes far beyond simply choosing “healthy foods.” Functional nutrition practitioners are trained to consider the interconnected influences of lifestyle, stress, environmental exposures, genetic and epigenetic factors, and the microbiome. Together, these insights help us understand why your body is responding the way it is and what it needs to move toward balance.

During your session, we explore your unique story, clarify both short-term and long-term goals, and design a personalized plan that may include targeted foods, supplements, and supportive practices. This approach honors your individuality and helps create a path toward more sustainable nourishment, resilience, and vitality.

Western Clinical Herbalism

Herbalism is more than knowing which plants help with which symptoms—it is a holistic practice that centers the whole person. Western clinical herbalism blends traditional botanical knowledge with modern clinical assessment, safety considerations, and evidence-informed practice. This approach looks not only at symptoms, but at the underlying patterns, imbalances, and lived experiences that shape your health.

Western clinical herbalists are trained to:

  • understand human physiology and how herbs interact with body systems
  • interpret clinical presentations and tailor botanical strategies accordingly
  • evaluate herb–nutrient, herb–drug, and herb–condition interactions
  • select herbs based on both traditional use and current scientific research
  • create individualized formulas rather than “one-size-fits-all” remedies

This means herbal therapy becomes a collaborative process—one that honors your story, your sensitivities, your goals, and the unique ways your body communicates.

Many people have become disconnected from their internal cues for rest, nourishment, and care. Herbal work offers a gentle way to reconnect with these inner rhythms. By observing the cycles of nature—activity and restoration, growth and recovery—we can relearn how to honor similar cycles within ourselves.

In our sessions, we start with your goals and your lived experience. Together, we explore dietary patterns, lifestyle factors, stress responses, and the ways plants can support your healing process.

Your herbal recommendations or formulas are crafted using:

  • traditional Western herbal knowledge
  • current scientific evidence
  • clinical assessment of your presentation
  • a trauma-informed approach that prioritizes safety, choice, and pacing

Every botanical selected is chosen with care—supporting you in cultivating balance, resilience, and a deeper connection to your body.

Clinical Aromatherapy

Essential oils—highly concentrated, volatile compounds distilled or expressed from plants—have been used therapeutically for centuries. In recent years, interest in essential oils has grown dramatically, and many people are drawn to their potency and effects. Yet, like all powerful medicines, essential oils require knowledge, respect, and careful use.

Each essential oil carries a unique chemical profile shaped by its species, growing conditions, and extraction method. This complexity is part of what makes essential oils such meaningful therapeutic allies. At the same time, essential oils differ from whole-herb preparations: they are highly concentrated extracts, representing a vast amount of plant material. Because they are separate from the buffering components of the whole plant, they can be easy to overuse—posing potential risks to both individual wellbeing and the environment.

At Nourish Well, we practice clinical aromatherapy, an evidence-informed and safety-centered approach that integrates essential oils thoughtfully into your care when appropriate.

We emphasize:

  • judicious, minimal-effective use
  • high-quality, ethically sourced essential oils (organic or wild-grown)
  • verified testing and Certificates of Analysis to ensure purity and identity
  • safe dilution, application, and dosing guidance tailored to your needs
  • consideration of environmental sustainability
  • support for your microbiome and detoxification pathways to reduce potential adverse effects

As part of your personalized plan, we may explore whether an essential oil blend could offer additional support—whether for mood, stress, respiratory comfort, or other goals. If included, you’ll receive clear guidance on how to use these oils safely, with attention to your unique sensitivities, health history, and preferences.

This trauma-informed, evidence-aligned approach ensures that aromatherapy enhances your healing process without overwhelming your system or the planet.

Somatic Experiencing®

Somatic Experiencing® (SE) is a body-based therapeutic approach that helps restore balance to the autonomic nervous system and supports healing from the effects of stress and trauma. Instead of focusing only on thoughts or emotions, SE works with the physical sensations and patterns held in the body—signs of how your system has adapted to long-term overwhelm, illness, or chronic activation.

Chronic stress, medical trauma, and prolonged illness can leave the body stuck in states of fight, flight, or freeze. SE uses gentle, paced interventions to help your system complete these interrupted stress responses, release stored tension, and gradually increase your capacity for regulation and resilience.

SE sessions may include:

  • noticing and tracking physical sensations with support

  • identifying cycles of activation and settling

  • gentle grounding and stabilization practices

  • titration and pacing to maintain safety and prevent overwhelm

  • supporting the body’s natural movement toward balance

SE can be especially helpful for individuals navigating chronic illness, nervous system dysregulation, trauma-related health patterns, fatigue, and persistent tension or pain. By improving autonomic regulation, SE can enhance your body’s ability to respond to nutrition, herbal therapeutics, and other integrative treatments.

At Nourish Well, SE is offered within a trauma-informed, collaborative framework—honoring your pace, your story, and your body’s innate capacity to heal.
